Hi all,
As you may already know, next Tuesday, 23 January, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists will announce how close the Doomsday Clock is to midnight in 2024. The announcement will be made at 15.00 GMT.
This is always a powerful opportunity to engage media and new audiences in a conversation about the existential threat that nuclear weapons still pose, and bring in the TPNW as a ray of hope. Similarly to last year, I would like to share some talking points and other resources to help you do so.
Last year, the Clock was set the closest it has ever been to midnight – the time that signifies the annihilation of humanity - at 90 seconds. The Bulletin’s panel of experts https://thebulletin.org/about-us/science-and-security-board/ set the time on the basis of their assessment of the level of risk of annihilation from nuclear weapons, climate change and disruptive technologies, such as artificial intelligence.
Ahead of this year’s announcement, the President and CEO of the Bulletin, Rachel Bronson, has said https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/01/13/doomsday-clock-2024-announcement/72175283007/ "Climate change and nuclear risk continue to play very large factors in setting the timing of the Doomsday Clock, as the effects of the climate crisis become more felt and the threats of nuclear escalation in Ukraine and nuclear arms racing globally continue to loom large", adding "This year the technology conversation must also include the recent rapid advancements in AI."
In light of this, it seems likely the Clock will say we are in imminent danger of bringing about the end of our species. But of course, we will not know what they decide until the announcement.
Our aim is to use this dire warning to galvanise urgent action in support of the TPNW as the best way to prevent the destruction of humanity and the planet by a nuclear war.
It would be great if as many of us in as many countries as possible, but especially nuclear-armed or nuclear endorsing countries, can use the announcement to engage people on social media and through traditional media to amplify our messages.
If you are in contact with journalists, these are our key messages:
The Doomsday Clock announcement shows how the threat that nuclear weapons will be used in conflict is the highest it has ever been because of the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza and the growing nuclear arms race between the nuclear-armed states. · Despite the deteriorating security situation, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the bright spot – the TPNW is growing in strength with almost half of all states either having signed, ratified or acceded to the treaty and it is the best way we can prevent a nuclear war because it is the only treaty where progress on disarmament is being made.
The Bulletin’s panel of experts make their judgement by assessing the existential threats from nuclear weapons, climate change and artificial intelligence - these three threats are also interrelated and this highlights the need for us to take action on all three together at the same time.
Please note that you do not have to wait until the announcement is made to get in touch with journalists. You can also reach out this week to journalists you know have covered the Doomsday Clock in the past and indicate you would be available to react, or offer background information on the risk of nuclear weapons use.
The Bulletin has also put together this social media toolkit https://www.canva.com/design/DAF486DSDw0/4uRnj9IGFzDFI5Eyp4ZgPA/viewthat you can use for inspiration or direct use. They have asked us to share it with you and for you to pass it on to your networks as well, asking only that you let them know if you have organised activities around the announcement.
The Clock announcement usually generates quite a bit of media coverage and discussion on nuclear weapons, so let’s get involved in the conversation and let people know that it’s not all doom and gloom because we have the Treaty and it’s working.
Let me know by return of email about your plans, otherwise I look forward to seeing our messages out there on Tuesday.
All the best,
Alistair
